Overview
This 7 Days Rwanda gorillas & Nyiragongo hike is an epic tour offering you great experiences. Enjoy a trek to see the mountain gorillas and golden monkeys of Volcanoes National Park. Plus, you get to hike to the summit of Nyiragongo Volcano in Virunga National Park, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. During this 7 days safari you will also enjoy some time to soak in the cool air in the small time at Lake Kivu. This entire safari begins and ends in Kigali, Rwanda.
Detailed Itinerary.
Day 1: Pick up & transfers to Volcanoes National Park
Our driver guide will pick you up from the airport or your hotel in Kigali. Drive through Kigali northwestwards to Volcanoes National Park, the primate center in Rwanda. The driving time is roughly 3 hours via Rwanda’s rolling hills, Virunga Volcanoes and local communities.
Day 2: Mountain gorilla trekking.
Getup early, have breakfast and drive to Kinigi Park headquarters for registration and pre gorilla trekking briefing. At 8:00 am, startup a hike to met the endangered gorillas in their natural habitat. The allowed time with gorillas is one hour strictly. Travelers are reminded to use this hour to take pictures, capture live videos and enjoy a close encounter with the endangered gorillas. Hike back and drive back to the lodge for refreshment. If time allows, visit the neighboring local communities for a cultural performance.
Day 3: Golden Monkey trekking / Dian Fossey Grave yard.
Today, you can do optional golden monkey trekking or hike to the graveyard of Dian Fossey. This was American primatologist who lost her life to save the endangered gorillas that were at the verge of extinction. Both of these experiences are exceptional and worth it. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 4: Transfer to Lake Kivu and to Virunga N/park via Goma boarder
Have breakfast, check out and transfer to Lake Kivu. Relax and chill at the sandy beaches of the lake and embrace the natural beauty. You will then, cross over to the base of Nyiragongo volcano overlooking the lush Parc National des Virunga in Congo. Dinner and overnight stay is at the lodge here.
Day 5: Nyiragongo Hike
In the early morning, have breakfast and drive to Kibati briefing point. Register and listen to the security and safety measures of hiking Nyiragongo. The hike to the summit of Nyiragongo Volcano takes roughly 6-7 hours depending on the traveler’s physical fitness and hiking speed. Spend the night at the summit of the volcano to see the burning lava, which glows at night. Overnight stay at Nyiragongo mountain huts.
Day 6: Descend & drive to Kigali
Have a morning breakfast and enjoy sunrise at the summit of the active volcano. Thereafter, descend the mountain and drive to Kigali in Rwanda for refreshment and some relaxation.
Day 7: Departure
Have breakfast at the hotel in Kigali, followed by an optional city tour or shoppin for some mementos. Later, drive to Kigali airport. This marks the end of your 7 days Rwanda gorillas & Nyiragongo hike. Also, depending on the time of your departure flight you might find time to take one last photo with us.
